About the Arena

Við Tjarnir is an innovation, making it possible for event planners in the Faroes to organise new events of a kind we are not used to see in the Faroes.

ABOUT THE ARENA

Við Tjarnir is a large building with a floor plan of about 5,000 m2. The building is in three floors with a total floor area of 8,100 m2.
The arena floor measures 2,480 m2.

Considering its size, the arena can host most top-tier international matches and competition in Faroese indoor sports.

The arena is easily adaptable, i.e. the set up can easily and quickly be changed from a training hall to an international match, a concert or other large gathering.

Við Tjarnir will have something to offer everyone in the Faroes, host a varied selection of events that will raise the standard in the Faroese experience industry to the benefit of all who live in the country. Við Tjarnir is an innovation, making it possible for event planners in the Faroes to organise new events of a kind we are not used to see in the Faroes.

The arena can be a giant training site Thursday night, the home court for the national handball team on Friday, the venue for a big-name concert on Saturday, and the host of a church conference on Sunday. Due to its flexibility, the arena’s daily operations will not be significantly disturbed by large weekend events.

Example:

Handball match spectators: About 2,200 seated and 500 standing.
Concert goers: About 3,700 seated.
Concert goers: About 4,700 standing.

About the Name

The arena is named Við Tjarnir.

Many suggestions were submitted in the competition to name the arena, but one submitter rose above the rest:

"A pond (tjørn in Faroese) is often associated with play and having a good time. A beautiful, glittering eye in a green field, a pond draws life to itself, and everything flourishes around it."

The longer the committee mulled over “tjarnir” (ponds), the more convinced it was by the submission and agreed on the name Við Tjarnir (by the ponds).

The committee chose a new, beautiful Faroese place name, which
- reflects the ponds dotted around the area
- is pleasing to the ear
- creates good vibes
- could refer to many places in the Faroes
